  • You print up to 5,000 pages a month on the MX331 — it's rated for 50,000 but the recommended sweet spot is 500-5,000.
  • You only scan one-sided originals and don't mind flipping the stack — the MX331's simplex ADF handles it, just slower than the MX431.
  • You want wireless on the MX331 — it ships wired-only; you'll need to step up to the MX431adwe variant or add a print server.
  • You're replacing a Brother MFC-L2750DW or similar — the Lexmark touchscreen is smaller (2.8") but the print engine is faster and the toner yield is higher with the 20K extra-high-yield cartridge.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need color. This whole series is mono — go to the CX330/CX430 series instead.
  • You print more than 8,000 pages a month consistently — the duty cycle handles it but you'll churn through 15K-20K toners and the small 350-sheet base tray will have you reloading constantly. Move up to an MX532 or MX622.
  • You need 11x17 / tabloid output — letter and legal max here, no A3 path on this chassis.
  • You want a large color touchscreen for scan-to-cloud workflows — the 2.8" panel is functional but cramped; SharePoint and OneDrive aren't native scan destinations.
  • You need stapling, hole-punch, or any inline finishing — none of that is available on this platform.

The MX331 runs 40 ppm with a 50,000-page monthly duty cycle and a simplex ADF; the MX431 steps up to 42 ppm, an 80,000-page duty cycle, and a single-pass dual-head ADF that scans both sides at 92-96 images per minute — the upgrade is worth it if you scan stacks. Standard paper capacity is 350 sheets in the tray plus a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder, expandable to 900 sheets with the optional 550-sheet drawer. Resolution is 2400 IQ for both print and the 2.8-inch color touchscreen handles copy, scan, fax, and basic walk-up jobs without much training. First page out is 5.9-6.2 seconds, fast enough that nobody complains. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 standard; Wi-Fi is optional on the MX431 (the MX331 stays wired). The thing buyers regret: the small 2.8" display feels dated next to a Brother or Canon equivalent, and there's no built-in scan-to-SharePoint or scan-to-cloud — you're scanning to email, FTP, or a network folder.
