Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP LaserJet Ent MFP 8601DN Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a 30-100 person mono workgroup that needs A3 (11x17) output and doesn't need color.
  • You print 10,000-30,000 pages a month — comfortably inside the 250,000-page duty cycle.
  • You scan moderate volumes daily but don't push the ADF beyond 200-sheet jobs.
  • You want HP Wolf enterprise security at a lower price than the 8601z Flow.
  • You don't need fax day one but want it as an optional add-on.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 5,000-10,000 pages a month — overbuilt but the per-page cost is excellent (45,000-page 176A black toner).
  • You need wireless — Jetdirect 3100w accessory around $200.
  • You occasionally scan large stacks — 200-sheet ADF handles most jobs at 90 ppm.
  • You're upgrading from an older mono HP 800-series MFP — this drops into the same Web JetAdmin tooling.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You scan stacks all day — the 200-sheet ADF and 90 ppm speed will be the bottleneck. Pay up for the 8601z Flow.
  • You need a pull-out keyboard for scan-to-email metadata — the dn doesn't have one.
  • You ever need color — this is mono only.
  • You print under 3,000 pages a month — get the M507 or M528 instead.
  • You need fax day-one — the analog fax module is a separate purchase.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP 8601dn (9S186A) is the non-Flow mono A3 enterprise multifunction — 70 ppm print and copy, 250,000-page monthly duty cycle, HP Wolf Security with post-quantum cryptography — but with a 200-sheet single-pass ADF (90 ppm / 180 ipm scan) instead of the 8601z Flow's 300-sheet ADF (150/300 ipm). No built-in keyboard. Fax is optional via the analog fax accessory. Best fit: a workgroup of 30-100 users printing 10,000-30,000 pages a month who need in-house tabloid output and want enterprise-grade security without paying for the Flow's high-volume scanning. Standard paper input is 2,180 sheets across the 100-sheet multipurpose tray plus four 520-sheet trays; standard output is 500 sheets. The 10.1-inch color touchscreen runs the same scan-to-network, SharePoint, and OXP apps as the Flow. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus USB 2.0/3.0 standard; Wi-Fi, NFC, and BLE require the Jetdirect 3100w accessory. The 176A black toner runs 45,000 pages per cartridge — per-page cost is excellent. Buyer regret on the dn: thinking the ADF speed is the same as the z. If you scan more than a few hundred pages a day, get the z.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 1 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We got this for our small accounting office and it's been rock solid for about two years now. The duplex printing is fast, the scanner quality is good enough for our document archiving, and the network setup was straightforward. Toner costs are reasonable if you buy the high-yield cartridges."
