Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T830 Multifunction Printer Series is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're an AEC firm, GIS shop, or contractor printing 50-300 D-size plots a month and need scan/copy on the same device.
  • You need to scan 36-in-wide as-built drawings or red-lines back to the office without driving them to a service bureau.
  • You want a small-footprint plotter that fits in a 6-foot wide spot — at 55 inches wide, the 36-in model is the most compact MFP plotter HP makes.
  • You need 2400 x 1200 dpi line accuracy of 0.1% for technical drawings, plans, and maps.
  • You print mostly black-and-white CAD with the occasional color rendering — 4 dye-based cartridges (CMYK) cover both well enough.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 300-500 D-size plots a month — the machine handles it but you'll burn through the 130-ml cartridges fast; consider upgrading to 300-ml on a T1700 if volume keeps climbing.
  • You scan a few wide-format originals a week — the integrated CIS scanner is fine for as-builts and markups, just not photo-quality reproduction.
  • You need PostScript — base T830 doesn't include PostScript; you'll need the T1700 or upgrade firmware.
  • You only have one staff member who knows the device — touchscreen is intuitive but the roll-loading and cutter alignment have a learning curve.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print more than 500 plots a month — at that volume look at the DesignJet T1700 or PageWide XL 4200/6000 for faster throughput and 300-ml cartridges.
  • You need photo-quality color (renderings, presentation boards) — this is dye-based 4-color, not the 6-ink T1700 with photo black and grey.
  • You need to print on heavy media above 280 g/m² — the T830 tops out at 280 g/m² roll-fed.
  • You need true PostScript or PDF support out of the box — T830 is HP-GL/2 native; PostScript requires the T1700.
  • You need duplex print — large-format roll plotters don't duplex; that's a sheet-fed business.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T830 Multifunction Printer Series is the smallest large-format MFP HP makes — a print/scan/copy plotter aimed at AEC firms, contractors, and GIS shops that need to push 50-300 D-size plots a month and occasionally scan 24- or 36-inch-wide as-builts. The series comes in two widths: F9A28A (24-in) and F9A30A (36-in). Print quality runs up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi with 0.1% line accuracy, first plot in about 25 seconds, and the 4-color CMYK dye-ink system is fine for technical drawings and rendered overlays — not for photo prints. The integrated CIS scanner reads up to 600 dpi and 36 inches wide on the larger model, with scan-to-USB, network folder, and email built in. The 4.3-inch color touchscreen handles roll loading, cutter alignment, and copy jobs without a PC. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, and USB 2.0 host. The thing buyers regret: assuming this would replace a T1700. It won't — no PostScript, no 300-ml cartridges, no photo black/grey for renderings. The other gripe: ink cost. The 130-ml cartridges drain fast on color jobs. For straight CAD output and occasional copies in a small office, this is the right tool. For production graphics or 500+ plots a month, look at the T1700 or PageWide XL.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 1 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Good machine overall for our engineering office. Print speeds are decent and the multi-function capabilities mean we didn't have to buy a separate scanner. Ink costs are higher than I'd like and the WiFi connection drops occasionally but nothing we can't work around."
