Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Sharp BP-70M36 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a workgroup of 15-40 people that needs A3 (11x17) mono and prints 4,000-10,000 pages a month.
  • Your color volume is under 10% of total pages — the per-page mono cost saves real money over a 36 ppm color machine like the BP-70C36.
  • You scan stacks of contracts and need single-pass duplex at 280 ipm via the 300-sheet DSPF (color scanning is included even though printing is mono).
  • You want a 10.1" touchscreen with a real retractable keyboard so users can type long email subjects without thumb-typing.
  • You need cloud connectors (Teams, OneDrive, Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, SharePoint) standard.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 2,500-4,000 pages a month — the machine handles it but you'll just amortize it longer.
  • You occasionally need color — accept the workflow of sending color jobs elsewhere; this is mono only.
  • You need finishing — the BP-FN11 inner finisher (50-sheet staple) and BP-FN13/14/15/16 console finishers are options.
  • You don't have a Sharp dealer relationship — toner (BP-NT700), drum (BP-DR700), and developer (BP-NV700) are sold mainly through dealer service contracts.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 2,000 pages a month — get a desktop A4 mono MFP like the MX-B427W or MX-B467F.
  • You need color — get the BP-70C36 (same chassis, color engine).
  • You don't print 11x17 — an A4 desktop mono MFP covers your needs at a fraction of the floor space and price.
  • You need 45+ ppm — step to the BP-70M45, BP-70M55, BP-70M65 in the same chassis.
  • You don't have floor space for a 24 x 26 x 34 inch unit at 157 lbs.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Sharp BP-70M36 is the mid-tier A3 mono MFP in the Advanced Series, built for workgroups of 15-40 people printing 4,000-10,000 pages a month who don't need color. It uses the same 24 x 26 x 34 inch floor-standing chassis as the BP-70C36 (the color version) and the same 10.1" tilting touchscreen with retractable keyboard, but at meaningfully lower per-page cost. Prints and copies 36 ppm black, first-page-out 4.5 seconds from the platen. The 300-sheet single-pass DSPF still scans color at 280 ipm — so your scan-to-email and scan-to-network workflows get color, just your prints don't. Standard 650-sheet capacity (550-sheet drawer plus 100-sheet bypass), expandable to 6,300 with optional drawers and the 3,000-sheet LCC. Standard Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0/3.0, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, PCL 6, Adobe PostScript 3, AirPrint, Universal Print. Cloud connectors for Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Google Drive, Box, and Dropbox in the box. The thing buyers regret: assuming the BP-70M36 vs BP-70C36 decision is just about today's color volume — it's also about whether you might add color over the next 5 years. If you're not sure, the C36 costs more up front but keeps the option open.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 5 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Sharp machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Good workhorse machine for a busy office. Paper jams were a problem for the first month but haven't had issues since we adjusted how we load the paper. The finishing options have been helpful for our projects."
  • "Needed something reliable for document production and this Sharp has been solid. The color output looks professional and the duplex feature saves us paper. Only wish the interface was a bit more intuitive but you get used to it."
  • "Good machine overall. The copy quality is sharp and the touch screen interface is intuitive. Only downside is the learning curve on some of the advanced features took longer than I expected."
  • "Replaced our old Ricoh with this BP-70M36 and wish we'd done it sooner. Toner yields are better than advertised and the network printing from our workstations has been flawless."
  • "Pretty solid workhorse for a small business. The stapling and hole punch attachments work well most of the time, though occasionally the booklet function jams on thicker stock."
