Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP LaserJet Pro 4001dw Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a small office or workgroup of up to 10 people that needs Wi-Fi without running Ethernet to the printer.
  • You print 750-4,000 pages a month, mostly two-sided.
  • You want HP's self-healing Wi-Fi — the radio auto-reconnects if it drops the network.
  • You print from phones and tablets often — AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth all standard.
  • You want HP Wolf Pro security preconfigured but without the Ethernet cable.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You also have Ethernet available — the dw does both, so you can wire it for stability and keep Wi-Fi as backup.
  • You want a third tray — the D9P29A 550-sheet feeder takes total input to 900 sheets.
  • You print up to 6,000 pages a month — the 80,000 max duty handles it, plan on W1480X high-yield cartridges.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You're on a wired-only security policy — get the 4001dn (2Z600F) and skip the Wi-Fi radio entirely.
  • You need to scan, copy, or fax — print-only. Look at the LaserJet Pro MFP 4101fdw.
  • You need color — mono only. Get a Color LaserJet Pro 4201dw or 4301fdw.
  • You print over 5,000 pages a month consistently — step up to a LaserJet Enterprise M507dn or M528.
  • You want a touchscreen — this is a 2-line LCD; nothing fancy.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP LaserJet Pro 4001dw is the wireless auto-duplex mono laser in the 4001 series — same chassis and engine as the 4001dn but with dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth added. Best fit: small offices of up to 10 people that print 750-4,000 pages a month and don't want to run an Ethernet drop to wherever the printer ends up living. Print speed is 42 ppm letter, first page out 6.1 seconds, max duty 80,000 pages a month, recommended volume 4,000. Standard input is 350 sheets (100-sheet MP + 250-sheet tray 2), expandable to 900 with the optional D9P29A 550-sheet feeder. Auto duplex is standard. HP's self-healing Wi-Fi will auto-reconnect if the network drops — useful when the printer lives in a back room with weak signal. Mobile printing covers AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct, and HP Smart app. HP Wolf Pro Security comes preconfigured. The 2-line backlit LCD is the same minimal display as the n/dn. Uses HP 148A (~2,900) or 148X (~9,500) toner. The thing buyers regret: putting it on 2.4 GHz when 5 GHz was available — print throughput on 5 GHz is roughly 2x.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for our small accounting office for about 8 months now. The 4001dw handles our daily volume without any issues, and the mobile printing feature actually works the way it's supposed to. Network setup was straightforward."
  • "Good printer overall, prints fast and the toner cartridges last longer than my old machine. My only gripe is the duplex sometimes jams with thicker cardstock, but that's probably operator error on my part."
  • "Needed something reliable for my home office that could handle both regular documents and the occasional print job without breaking the bank on supplies. This checks all the boxes. Print quality is sharp and consistent."
