Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP LaserJet Enterprise 8501x Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You need a print-only mono A3 (11x17) printer for a workgroup of 50-150 people.
  • You print 15,000-40,000 pages a month — comfortable inside the 250,000-page duty cycle.
  • You want fewer paper-loading interruptions — 2,180 sheets standard across five trays means a full reload only weekly at moderate volume.
  • You already have an MFP for scanning and want a dedicated fast print engine.
  • You want HP Wolf enterprise security and don't need to pay for an MFP scanner you won't use.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 8,000-15,000 pages a month — overbuilt, but the toner economics keep per-page cost reasonable.
  • You need wireless — Jetdirect 3100w around $200.
  • You print mixed letter and 11x17 frequently — five trays let you keep both sizes loaded.
  • You want a stapler/stacker finisher — the 8501x ships ready for the optional inner finisher.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need to scan or copy — this is print-only. Get the 8601dn or 8801z instead.
  • You print under 4,000 pages a month — five 520-sheet trays are wasted on you. Get the 8501dn or M507x.
  • You ever need color — mono only.
  • You don't have the floor space — at 38.2 inches tall and 290 lb, this is bigger than the 8501dn.
  • You need wireless out of the box — optional only.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 8501x (AJ7J3A) is the high-capacity print-only mono A3 enterprise printer in the 8501 series — same 70 ppm engine and 250,000-page duty cycle as the 8501dn, but with 2,180-sheet standard input across five trays (100-sheet multipurpose plus four 520-sheet trays) instead of 1,140. Best fit is a workgroup of 50-150 printing 15,000-40,000 pages a month that wants fewer paper-loading interruptions. Auto duplex print, 4.3-inch color touchscreen, Gigabit Ethernet plus USB 2.0/3.0 standard, optional Wi-Fi/NFC/BLE via Jetdirect 3100w. HP Wolf Security stack — Sure Start BIOS self-heal, Memory Shield, Trusted Platform Module, post-quantum cryptography on 25.9.2.2+ firmware — is identical to the rest of the 8501/8601/8801 chassis family. The 176A black toner runs 45,000 pages per cartridge. The 8501x is taller and heavier than the 8501dn (38.2 inches vs 28.1, 207 lb vs 144) because of the extra trays — make sure you have the floor space. Buyer regret: buying the x when the dn would have been fine. If you print under 8,000 pages a month, save the money and get the dn.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been running this in our office for about 18 months now and it's held up really well. Fast printing, the 8501x handles our volume without complaint, and toner costs are reasonable compared to what we were paying before."
  • "Does the job for our small business. Print quality is solid and it's reliable, though the learning curve on the network settings took longer than expected. Would've appreciated better documentation."
  • "Upgraded from an older HP model and the speed difference is noticeable. The 8501x keeps up with demand in our department without jamming or overheating issues."

FAQ

HP LaserJet Enterprise 8501x Printer, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (706) 561-0075 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

Yes, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 8501x Printer ships with a starter HP 176A Black Original LaserJet Toner Cartridge (W1760A), which yields approximately 45,000 pages. The replacement toner model is the same HP 176A, also yielding 45,000 pages. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The HP LaserJet Enterprise 8501x is a monochrome, print-only A3 printer with a 70 ppm speed and 250,000-page duty cycle, ideal for high-volume workgroups. In contrast, the HP Color LaserJet Managed Flow MFP E78625z is a color multifunction printer with a 25 ppm speed, scanning capabilities, and a 110,000-page duty cycle, suited for smaller workgroups needing color and scanning. The 8501x focuses on high-speed monochrome printing, while the E78625z offers versatility with color and multifunction features. For small offices needing color and scanning, the E78625z is a better fit.
The HP LaserJet Enterprise 8501x Printer is designed for workgroups of 50-150 users printing 15,000-40,000 pages monthly, making it overkill for most small businesses. Its 70 ppm speed and high-volume capacity are better suited for larger offices. Small businesses may find it more cost-effective to consider a commercial option better matched to their needs.
No, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 8501x Printer is a monochrome-only printer. For color printing, consider alternatives like the HP Color LaserJet Managed Flow MFP E78625z, HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M681, or HP Color LaserJet Enterprise Flow MFP M680.
