Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet XL 3600 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a central reprographics group or corporate print department running 100+ plots daily.
  • You need 4-roll capacity for unattended overnight production.
  • You handle mostly CAD line work, schematics, and engineering plots.
  • You want the consistent throughput of PageWide stationary printbar technology.
  • You both plot and scan multiple times daily with the integrated CIS.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if you plot 50-100 daily and want headroom.
  • It's fine if you scan occasionally and use the MFP capability lightly.
  • It's fine if you accept PageWide chemistry trade-offs for color images.
  • It's fine if you have wired infrastructure.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if you do mostly photographic color renderings — go Z9+.
  • Skip this if your volume is under 30 plots daily.
  • Skip this if you only need 24-inch width.
  • Skip this if you only plot and don't scan — T1600 fits better.
  • Skip this if you need 44-inch width.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet XL 3600 is a 36-inch wide-format color multifunction printer-copier-scanner aimed at central reprographics and corporate print departments handling production volumes. Print speed runs 3 D/A1 pages per minute (about 22 sec per A1) using HP PageWide Technology — a stationary printbar rather than scanning printheads, which delivers consistent throughput across mixed jobs. Scan width up to 36 inches with CIS color capture. Resolution reaches 2400 x 1200 dpi optimized. Standard config includes 4 rolls with auto-switching and a 100-sheet stacker. Wired Ethernet, USB, Wi-Fi optional. The regret on this machine: PageWide ink chemistry differs from thermal inkjet — line work and CAD output are crisp, but photographic color isn't on par with the Z9+ or T1700 with dye-based 6-ink chemistry. If you do mostly renderings, look elsewhere. HP PageWide Technology uses a stationary printbar with thousands of nozzles spanning the print width — different from scanning printheads — which delivers consistent throughput across mixed jobs. PostScript and HP-GL/2 are standard, and HP DesignJet PrintOS provides cloud monitoring.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

FAQ

HP DesignJet XL 3600, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (706) 561-0075 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

Yes, the HP DesignJet XL 3600 ships with starter ink cartridges. The starter cartridges are 300 ml HP 766 Ink Cartridges, which include Matte Black (pigment-based) and Cyan, Gray, Magenta, Photo Black, and Yellow (dye-based). Replacement cartridges are the same high-yield 300 ml HP 766 cartridges, designed for high-volume printing. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The HP DesignJet XL 3600 is a wide-format color multifunction printer designed for large-format printing, such as CAD and architectural drawings, with a 36-inch print width and HP PageWide Technology. In contrast, the HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E78625dn is a floor-standing A3 color laser MFP designed for office environments, with a focus on document printing, copying, and scanning at 25 ppm. The DesignJet XL 3600 uses ink cartridges and is optimized for high-volume, large-format output, while the E78625dn uses toner and is better suited for general office use with enterprise security features. For small offices needing standard document printing, the E78625dn is a more practical choice.
The HP DesignJet XL 3600 is designed for high-volume, large-format printing, making it ideal for businesses that require wide-format output, such as architectural firms or engineering departments. However, its large size, specialized functionality, and high-volume capabilities may be excessive for a typical small business with standard printing needs. If your business primarily needs standard document printing, consider a more compact and cost-effective option.
Yes, the HP DesignJet XL 3600 supports color printing. It uses six Original HP Inks, including Cyan, Gray, Magenta, Photo Black, and Yellow (dye-based), along with Matte Black (pigment-based), to produce high-quality color output. This makes it suitable for applications requiring color accuracy, such as CAD drawings and renderings.
