Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet T1700dr 44-in PostScript Printer is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're an AEC firm printing 24x36+ drawings on multiple media types daily.
  • You print 50-200 plans weekly across bond, vellum, and gloss.
  • You need auto media-switching between two loaded rolls.
  • You need PostScript 3 and HP-GL/2 for CAD output.
  • You want a 500 GB drive for stored jobs and reprints.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if your team is mixed Mac/Windows running CAD.
  • It's fine if some users print from mobile via Wi-Fi.
  • It's fine if you use HP DesignJet Click for printing without specialized drivers.
  • It's fine if you sometimes print full-color renderings as well as line work.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if you only use one media type - the single-roll T1700 saves money.
  • Skip this if you need 64-inch wide media - get the Z6 Pro 64-inch.
  • Skip this if you need photo-grade output - get the Z6 Pro.
  • Skip this if you don't print wide-format weekly.
  • Skip this if you need scan capability - get the SD Pro 2 MFP.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet T1700dr is the dual-roll trim of the T1700 line - same 44-inch wide-format AEC plotter, same HP Bright Office inks, same PostScript 3 and HP-GL/2 native support, but with two roll feeds instead of one. The dual-roll setup lets you load bond and vellum (or two roll widths) at the same time and the printer auto-selects based on the print job's specs. Other shared specs: 500 GB internal hard drive, 4.3-inch touchscreen, Gigabit Ethernet plus Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), and HP DesignJet Click for printing without CAD drivers. Line-drawing throughput around 116 A1 prints per hour. The honest regret: even with two rolls, color tone shifts can happen between rolls if they're from different paper batches - large color-critical jobs should still be printed on a single roll for tonal consistency. For an AEC firm that prints both bond drawings and vellum redlines daily and doesn't want to swap rolls all day, the dr trim earns its upcharge. This is the working trim of the T1700 line for active AEC firms.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We use this for architectural drawings at our firm and the 44-inch width saves us so much time on large format work. Color accuracy is solid and the PostScript driver handles our CAD files without any conversion issues. Been running it for two years with minimal maintenance."
  • "Good printer overall for poster and banner work, though the learning curve on the software was steeper than I expected. Once we got it dialed in, output quality is consistent. My main complaint is the ink costs add up fast if you're doing full color runs regularly."
  • "Upgraded from our old Canon and this handles our engineering drawings perfectly. The dye-based inks dry quick and don't smudge, which was a real problem before. Support from HP has been responsive when we had setup questions."

FAQ

HP DesignJet T1700dr 44-in PostScript Printer, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (706) 561-0075 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The HP DesignJet T1700dr 44-in PostScript Printer ships with starter ink cartridges, not toner, as it is an inkjet plotter. The starter cartridges typically yield around 130 ml per color. Replacement high-yield ink cartridges (300 ml) are available for all colors, including Matte Black (P2V71A), Photo Black (P2V73A), Cyan (P2V68A), Magenta (P2V69A), Yellow (P2V70A), and Gray (P2V72A). When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
The HP DesignJet T1700dr is a wide-format inkjet plotter designed for AEC firms, supporting 44-inch rolls and specialized inks for large-format prints, while the HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E78625dn is a floor-standing A3 color laser MFP for office use, with a 25 ppm print speed and a 110,000-page monthly duty cycle. The DesignJet uses liquid ink and is optimized for CAD and large-format printing, whereas the Color LaserJet uses toner and is built for high-volume office document printing and scanning. For small offices needing color documents, the Color LaserJet is more suitable, while the DesignJet is ideal for architectural or engineering firms requiring wide-format prints.
The HP DesignJet T1700dr is designed for AEC firms and large-format printing needs, making it less ideal for typical small business use due to its specialized wide-format capabilities and higher cost. Small businesses with standard document printing needs may find it more practical to consider a commercial office printer.
Yes, the HP DesignJet T1700dr 44-in PostScript Printer supports color printing with a six-color ink system (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Photo Black, Matte Black, and Gray), delivering high-quality color output up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi.
