Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP DesignJet HD Pro 44-in MFP is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run an A/E/C, repro, or municipal shop that scans, copies, and prints large drawings, maps, and posters daily.
  • You scan thick or fragile originals — the HD Pro 2 scanner accepts media up to 0.6 in (15 mm) thick on a straight-through paper path.
  • You need borderless output — the integrated V-Trimmer on the Z6dr printer cuts borderless on all media.
  • You scan 200-2,000 large-format originals a month at up to 13 in/sec (33 cm/sec) color or grayscale, 1200 dpi.
  • You produce mixed batches of CAD prints and presentation graphics in one place — dual roll feeds with smart roll-switching, automatic horizontal cutter, V-Trimmer.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You scan less than 50 large originals a month — capacity is there, you'll just amortize over a longer lease.
  • You don't need V-Trimmer — the standalone Z6dr exists without it; the V-Trimmer is the value-add.
  • You print under 100 sq ft per month — the Z6dr is a production machine and somewhat overbuilt at that volume.
  • You want to drive the scanner from a separate Windows PC instead of a panel-PC — possible, but the 2QX51D bundle includes the Windows 10 panel-PC; this 2QX51E config typically expects an existing workstation.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You only need scan and copy — buy the standalone HP HD Pro 2 42-in Scanner (5EK00A).
  • You only need to print — buy the standalone Z6dr 44-in PostScript Printer.
  • You need photo-lab-grade gamut — Z9+ Pro is the wider-gamut photo machine; HD Pro 2 MFP printer side is technical/repro tuned.
  • You don't have a 16-foot wall — printer is 70.9 in, scanner is another 60.2 in, plus clearance.
  • You don't have an HP MPS or reseller relationship — bundle pricing and Z6dr supplies are easier through contract channels.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP DesignJet HD Pro 44-in MFP (2QX51E) bundles an HP DesignJet Z6dr 44-in PostScript printer with V-Trimmer and an HP HD Pro 2 42-in Scanner — built for A/E/C, repro shops, and municipal records offices that scan, copy, and print large drawings and maps daily. The scanner runs at up to 13 in/sec (33 cm/sec) in color or grayscale at 1200 dpi using CCD optics and LED illumination, with a straight-through paper path that handles originals up to 0.6 in (15 mm) thick — fragile blueprints, foam-core mounts, and cardboard go through without creasing. Scan destinations are file, email, USB, internal HDD, network folder, FTP, and direct print. On the print side, you get HP pigment inks at 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi, dual automatic roll feeds with smart roll-switching, automatic horizontal cutter, and the integrated V-Trimmer for borderless output. Print speed is up to 80.5 m²/hr fast-economode plain / 18.8 m²/hr normal coated / 9.7 m²/hr best glossy. Memory is 128 GB file processing on the printer (500 GB encrypted HDD), 8 GB plus 256 GB HDD on the scanner. The thing buyers regret: assuming this is one chassis. It's a printer and a separate scanner that share a workflow — combined footprint is over 16 feet of wall.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "We use this for our architecture firm and it's been solid for large format printing. The 44-inch width handles our plans without needing to tile, and the print quality is crisp. Setup took a bit of troubleshooting with the network drivers, but once it was going, we've had minimal issues."
  • "Good machine overall for our small print shop. Color accuracy is decent and it handles different media types without much fussing. Only reason I'm not giving it five stars is the replacement ink cartridges are expensive and it seems to go through them faster than I'd expect."
  • "Upgraded from an older HP and this is a major step up. The scanning and copying functions work great for our office, and the multifunction capability saves us desk space. Just wish the manual was clearer on some of the advanced settings."

FAQ

HP DesignJet HD Pro 44-in MFP, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (706) 561-0075 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The HP DesignJet HD Pro 44-in MFP ships with starter ink cartridges, not toner, as it uses HP Thermal Inkjet pigment-based technology. The starter cartridges have a lower yield, while high-yield 300 ml HP 746 Ink Cartridges are available for replacement, supporting high-volume printing. When you lease through us with ink included, you never pay for ink separately.
The HP DesignJet HD Pro 44-in MFP is a large-format inkjet printer designed for technical drawings and maps, with a 44-inch print width and high-resolution scanning. In contrast, the HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E78625dn is a floor-standing A3 color laser MFP for office use, printing at 25 ppm and scanning at 90 ppm. The DesignJet is ideal for specialized large-format tasks, while the E78625dn suits general office environments. For small offices needing color printing, the E78625dn is a more practical choice.
The HP DesignJet HD Pro 44-in MFP is designed for specialized tasks like printing large-format technical drawings and maps, making it less suitable for typical small business needs. Its high-speed scanning and large-format capabilities are overkill for general office use. Small businesses requiring standard printing and scanning should consider a more compact and cost-effective option like the HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E78625dn.
Yes, the HP DesignJet HD Pro 44-in MFP supports color printing using six pigment-based ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow, matte black, photo black, and chromatic red). It delivers high-resolution color output up to 2400 x 1200 optimized dpi, making it ideal for technical and graphic applications.
