Is this the right printer for you?

Who the HP Clr LaserJet Ent MFP 5800dn Prntr is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a workgroup of 10-30 people that needs print, copy, and scan in a desktop-footprint A4 MFP — fax and Wi-Fi are extras you can add later.
  • You print 2,000-10,000 color pages a month — HP's recommended sweet spot.
  • You scan two-sided originals daily and want them done at 100 ipm via the single-pass dual-head ADF.
  • You manage HP fleets through Web JetAdmin or Command Center and want a consistent FutureSmart 5 device.
  • You want enterprise security (HP Wolf, Sure Start BIOS self-heal) without paying for the Flow tier.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 10,000-15,000 pages a month — the 80,000 duty cycle handles it but toner economics get tight. Consider the 6700/6800 series.
  • You'll need fax later — the analog fax accessory (1M0Q0A or 1M0Q1A) bolts in but adds an invoice line.
  • You want wireless out of the box — Wi-Fi/NFC is the optional Jetdirect 3100w accessory at around $200.
  • You're swapping out an HP M577 or older — drivers and admin tools carry over cleanly under FutureSmart 5.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need fax day one without adding accessories — the 5800f variant ships with fax included for the same chassis.
  • You need 11x17 (tabloid) — this is A4/Letter only. Step up to the 6800 series for tabloid.
  • You need Flow features — multi-feed detection, embedded OCR, scan-to-SharePoint shortcuts come on the 5800zf, not this base model.
  • You print under 1,500 pages a month — you're over-buying. A LaserJet Pro MFP at half the price will cover it.
  • You don't have a managed print contract or HP reseller — supplies are fine retail, but service kits route easier through a partner.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP 5800dn is the base A4 color MFP in HP's 5800 family — print, copy, scan in a desktop-footprint chassis, with fax and wireless as add-on accessories. It runs at 45 ppm letter (43 ppm A4) in both black and color, copies at the same rate, and scans at 50 ppm / 100 ipm duplex through the 100-sheet single-pass dual-head ADF. Standard paper capacity is 650 sheets across the 550-sheet Tray 2 and 100-sheet multipurpose, expandable to 2,300 with up to three optional 550-sheet feeders. Duty cycle is 80,000 pages a month; HP recommends 2,000-10,000 for healthy 213-series toner economics. The 8-inch color touchscreen runs FutureSmart 5 — smaller than the 5800zf's 10.1-inch panel but plenty for walk-up copy and scan. HP Wolf Security (Sure Start BIOS self-heal, Memory Shield, run-time intrusion detection) is the reason regulated-industry customers pick this over the equivalent Canon iR or Lexmark CX. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus USB 2.0/3.0 standard; fax (1M0Q0A) and Wi-Fi/NFC (3JN69A) are accessories. The thing buyers regret: assuming this includes fax. It doesn't. If anyone in the office sends or receives faxes, get the 5800f — same chassis, fax included.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 2 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging HP machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Solid workhorse for a small business. Print quality is consistent and the duplex scanning is fast. My only complaint is the toner costs add up, but that's pretty standard for color laser at this level."
  • "Replaced an older HP and this one is noticeably faster. The finishing options are really useful for our marketing materials, and IT had no issues integrating it into our system."
